Our takeThree tours in a day is easy here, and the beaches and fishing villages in between are the reward

Fife claims the oldest page in Scotch whisky’s story — the first written record of whisky-making comes from Lindores Abbey — and it is now one of the most interesting corners of the new Lowland whisky wave, from golf-links country on the east coast to the farm distilleries of the Howe of Fife.

Base 1 — Kingsbarns & St Andrews

Kingsbarns is the one to start with: a single-malt maker born in 2014 in the farm buildings of the Cambo Estate, with seven-day tours, a café and a shop, and the gin side, Darnley’s. See our Kingsbarns page for the beach, the snowdrop woods and an overnight. Inland of St Andrews, Eden Mill at Guardbridge is best known for its gins but returned to single-malt whisky in a smart new distillery in 2025, with tours. The East Neuk fishing villages — Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and Lower Largo — are all within easy reach.

Base 2 — the Howe of Fife & Lindores Abbey

Daftmill, near Cupar, is a tiny farm distillery whose bottlings sell out in minutes and change hands for large sums; it distils only when the farm allows, and it is not open to visitors. Further on, Lindores Abbey at Newburgh stands on the most historic ground in Scotch whisky — beside the medieval abbey ruins, with daily tours (every day March to October, Wednesday to Sunday in winter). Just beyond, Aberargie is a Morrison-family farm distillery on the Perthshire edge, just south of the Highland Line, whose first single malt is released from 2026; it is production only.

A spur — InchDairnie

InchDairnie near Glenrothes is deliberately innovation-focused — experimenting with rye, unusual yeasts and novel processes — and keeps a low public profile; occasional invitation-only events. It adds about 13 miles (22 minutes) from Daftmill.

Overnights, food & the practical bit

Kingsbarns itself has a superbly quiet overnight (our February visit is on its page); St Andrews and the villages have everything else. Lindores is closed some winter days, so check before you drive.
