Overview
Kingsbarns is one of the new wave of Scottish distilleries — a single-malt maker born in 2014 inside the stone farm buildings of East Newhall Farm, on the Cambo Estate beside the village of Kingsbarns, six and a half miles south-east of St Andrews. It is a Lowland malt: lighter and fruitier than the Highland and island styles, and made on the doorstep of the East Neuk’s fishing villages and golf links.
The history
The distillery was founded by Douglas Clement, and opened in November 2014, with the first casks filled in 2015. Its first single malt was released in August 2018 — the “Dream to Dram” that gives the range its signature — followed in November 2018 by Balcomie, a sherry-cask expression. A gin side, Darnley’s Gin, was added in 2017 in a separate “gin cottage” on the same site. It is now owned by the Wemyss family’s whisky-and-gin business, Wemyss Family Spirits, the people behind Wemyss Malts.
How it’s made
Kingsbarns runs just one wash still and one spirit still for a capacity of about 200,000 litres a year, drawing its water from a borehole on the estate. In November 2022 the company announced a major expansion — twelve bonded warehouses and its own bottling facility — and in December 2022 it prepared to enter the United States. The gin side distils Darnley’s in Italian-made stills, with Original, Spiced and Navy Strength expressions.
Visiting
The distillery runs whisky and gin tours seven days a week, with a café and a shop; it has also run seasonal “pay what you like” tours in the past. Prices change and the online booking system hides them, but earlier listings gave roughly £14 for the standard tour (children 8–17 about £4), £60 for the two-hour Dream to Dram tutored tasting, and £35 for a whisky-and-food-pairing tour — treat those as a guide and check the whisky experiences page for today’s prices.
Around it
This is the place to end a cold East Neuk day: the Cambo Estate snowdrop woods and the Fife Coastal Path are on the doorstep, and our Kingsbarns page has the walk, the beach and the overnight. Crail is 3.5 miles to the south, Anstruther and Pittenweem are just beyond it, and St Andrews is a short run to the north-west.
