Campbeltown: The “Wee Toon” at the End of Kintyre
Overview — the town at the end of the road
Right at the foot of the long Kintyre peninsula sits Campbeltown — the “Wee Toon” — a genuine, unshowy harbour town that most people never reach, and one with an outsized history. This was once the whisky capital of the world, and it’s still the heart of the peninsula: the place you provision, sleep, get a coffee, and base yourself for everything around it. We made it our base for the far south, and rather loved it.
Where it is (and where on the route)
Campbeltown sits on Campbeltown Loch, at the southern end of the A83 — about 140 miles from Glasgow — the hub of Stage 5 (Kintyre) of the Argyll Coastal Route.

🥃 OUR OWN BOTTLECampbeltown’s own welcome sign tells it well: Kinlochkilkerran became Campbeltown in 1607, when the 7th Earl of Argyll founded a plantation settlement. It grew into a major fishing port and, at its late-1800s peak, had more than 30 distilleries — the whisky capital of the world. US Prohibition and overproduction all but wiped it out; today just three survive: Springbank (est. 1828), Glengyle (Kilkerran) and Glen Scotia — making Campbeltown the smallest of Scotland’s whisky regions, and a proper pilgrimage for malt lovers. What we did in Campbeltown
A relaxed day pottering the Wee Toon — our own round:
- 🌳 Kinloch Park — a lovely walk around the park, right in the centre by the loch.
- ☕ Tea on the Quay — a stop for tea down on the quayside. (No photo — one for next time.)
- ☕🍰 The Fresh Connection — coffee and cake at this lovely wee coffee shop; genuinely nice, our pick of the two.
- 🍺 The Royal Hotel — a beer on the harbourfront to round things off.

🚐 Motorhome overnight — Kinloch Park (central & handy)
Here’s a genuinely useful one: we’ve overnighted at Kinloch Park in both the motorhome and the T5 — the public park with parking right in the centre of Campbeltown, by the loch. Brilliant, convenient base — walk to everything, harbour on your doorstep.
Please check current rules before you rely on it: town-centre overnight arrangements change — there may be a charge, time limits, facilities or a designated area. Park considerately, arrive late/leave early, leave no trace.

Why the Wee Toon is a walking day
Campbeltown is a town you cover on foot — the harbour, the loch shore, the distilleries, the Picture House — and it sits at the end of a very long road, so you tend to make a full day of it once you are there. A light pack takes the shopping, the distillery bottle you did not intend to buy, and the waterproof that Kintyre will eventually require.
☔ Down at the foot of Kintyre the weather is a local character all its own, and its favourite trick is rain — near enough daily from September to June. Wake to sunshine over the loch by all means, but don’t trust it past the first hour. The Campbeltown answer is a small backpack with a lightweight waterproof, trousers too on a rough day, and a compact brolly. Carry that walking or biking and the Wee Toon stays a joy whatever the sky does.
