The Far North Whisky Trail: Inverness to John O’Groats by the Sea

This is the whisky trail for a motorhome and a sense of adventure — a run up the far north-east of the Scottish mainland, from Inverness to the famous signpost at John O’Groats, taking in a string of distilleries with some of the emptiest, most beautiful coast in Britain in between. It ends at the most northerly distillery on the mainland, and the clifftops along the way are made for a responsible wild overnight.

The Easter Ross cluster

Heading north from Inverness, the first great cluster is around the Cromarty and Dornoch Firths. On the Black Isle is Glen Ord; at Dingwall the community-owned GlenWyvis; around Alness the rich, sherried Dalmore plus Teaninich and young Ardross; and around Tain the elegant Glenmorangie, with Balblair at Edderton and tiny Toulvaddie on the Fearn peninsula. It’s an easy day’s worth within a 25-mile radius.

Dornoch & the Sutherland coast

Cross into Sutherland for the cathedral town of Dornoch — home of the cult little Dornoch distillery and its famous whisky bar — then on up the coast to Brora, where two distilleries stand side by side: working Clynelish and the reborn ghost Brora. The A9 hugs the sea most of the way, with big skies and empty beaches.

Caithness & the top of the mainland

The road turns for Wick, the old herring port, and its maritime malt Old Pulteney; then Thurso for Wolfburn; and finally John O’Groats for 8 Doors, the most northerly distillery on the mainland, right by the signpost with Orkney on the horizon. From here you can loop back west along the wild north coast past Dunnet Head, the true northern tip.

Overnights & the practical bit

This is the one trail where the touring is as much the point as the tasting. The north and east coasts have campsites, aires and plenty of responsible wild-camping on the clifftops — leave no trace, park considerately, and use the facilities in the towns. Keep a sober driver for the distillery days, and note that several here (Dalmore by appointment, Brora by appointment, Wolfburn and 8 Doors by booking) need arranging ahead.
