Overview
8 Doors, at John O’Groats, is the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland — the whisky equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats. Opened in 2022 by Kerry and Derek Campbell, it makes a Highland single malt at the very top of the country, now quietly maturing.
The history
8 Doors takes its name from the famous octagonal John O’Groats House, said to have had eight doors so that eight quarrelling relatives could each enter without giving way. The distillery opened in 2022, the first ever at this iconic spot, and fills its casks within sight of the Pentland Firth and Orkney.

8 Doors draws on an on-site borehole.
8 Doors had no founding clan — it is a modern family distillery at John O’Groats, in Caithness — historic Clan Sinclair (Earls of Caithness) and Clan Gunn country at the far tip of the mainland.
Visiting
8 Doors has a visitor centre and tasting room and runs distillery tours — book ahead; check the website. It’s the perfect final stop of a top-to-bottom Scottish tour, right by the famous signpost.
