Nokta Legend 2 Review: The Machine That Caught the Equinox — for Less
For six years the answer to “what should a serious UK detectorist buy?” was a Minelab Equinox. The Legend 2 is the machine that ended that. It matches the Equinox 900 almost point for point, undercuts it, and Nokta updates it far more aggressively. If you are spending near four figures in 2026, this is the one to beat.
What changed from the original Legend
The first Legend was already a genuine Equinox rival. The Legend 2 is a refinement rather than a reinvention, but the refinements land where they matter:
- 99 target IDs — a much finer scale for telling one target from another before you dig
- Seven tone options and cleaner audio — this is the thing you actually use all day
- A brand-new Relic mode alongside Park, Field, Beach and Gold Field
- Redesigned interface — the original’s menu system was the most-criticised part
- Lighter and better balanced, with an adjustable armrest and a fold-flat coil
- Around 33% more battery runtime, and wireless firmware updates over Bluetooth
- Bone-conduction headphone support — genuinely useful in wind, and for hard-of-hearing users
The fold-flat coil deserves a mention on a travel site: it makes the machine pack down considerably smaller, which matters if it lives in a van rather than a garage.

The Equinox 900’s genuine advantage is the YouTube library. When you are stuck at 9pm wondering why your machine is falsing on the wet sand, there are a thousand videos about the Equinox and rather fewer about the Legend 2. For a beginner that is worth real money.
The Legend 2’s advantage is that it is a more modern platform being developed harder, and it is £50 cheaper with two coils in the box.
On a Scottish beach
Beach mode on the Legend 2 handles wet salt sand cleanly — this is a simultaneous multi-frequency machine and salt is what SMF exists to solve. The 99-point ID scale earns its keep in the sand around a car park or a slipway, where the ratio of ring-pulls and bottle tops to anything worth having is brutal and target ID is the only thing standing between you and digging four hundred holes.
The IP68 body means the surf line is fair game, and the surf line is where the gold is — jewellery works loose in cold water and settles where the waves drop it.
Who it doesn’t suit
This is not a beginner’s machine, and buying it as one is a common and expensive mistake. Its advantages — target-ID granularity, tone customisation, deep menu control — are precisely the things you cannot use until you have learned to read a machine. Spend a season on a Score or a Vanquish, then buy this and appreciate it.

Buy it if you have a season under your belt, you know you love this, and you want flagship-tier performance without flagship money. Buy the Equinox 900 instead if you value the vast body of learning material and the Minelab feel more than you value £50 and a slightly more modern platform. Both are correct answers; neither is a mistake.
Buy the XP Deus II instead if weight and packing size are your priority — it is £200–280 cheaper and roughly 40% lighter.
