Overview
Linkwood, on the edge of Elgin, is prized among blenders and connoisseurs for a delicate, floral, clean Speyside style often held up as a textbook example of the region. It is a key malt for the Johnnie Walker blends, and only occasionally seen as a single malt.
The history
Linkwood was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown, an estate factor and noted agricultural improver, and rebuilt over the years while famously keeping its methods (and even, by legend, the cobwebs) unchanged to protect the character of the spirit.
The water & the land
Linkwood draws on springs near Millbuies Loch, south of Elgin.
Linkwood had no founding clan — it was a commercial venture near Elgin, in historic Grant/Seafield and Gordon country.
Visiting
Linkwood is not open to the public — it is a working production distillery with no visitor centre. Its whisky appears mainly in blends and in occasional official or independent single-malt bottlings.
