Gairloch: Wester Ross Beaches, Loch Maree & a Whale-Watching Coast
Overview — the honest take
Gairloch is a scattered, easy-going crofting and fishing community on its own sea loch in Wester Ross — and it’s one of the loveliest bits of coast on the whole west. It has gorgeous white-sand beaches, a rocky, flower-strewn shore, a first-rate little museum, boat trips out to look for whales and dolphins, and, just inland, the breathtaking Loch Maree. It’s a place to slow right down and let the weather and the light do their thing.
Where it is
Gairloch sits on Loch Gairloch in Wester Ross, on the A832 — a glorious stretch of the Wester Ross coast / Wester Ross coast between Poolewe and Torridon. Ullapool is up the coast to the north-east.
The beaches
Gairloch’s beaches are the draw. The main Gairloch Beach and, just to the north, the wonderful Big Sand give long stretches of pale sand backed by machair and dunes, with the Torridon hills and the Isle of Skye out across the water. On a bright day the sea turns properly turquoise; on a wild one it’s all drama and spindrift. Either way, they’re a joy to walk.
The shore & the wildlife
Between the sands, the shore is a lovely tumble of lichen-orange rocks, sea-pinks and heather, brilliant for a potter and a rock-pool. Gairloch is also one of the best places on the mainland for marine wildlife: boat trips head out onto the loch and the Minch in search of minke whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and basking sharks, with sea eagles overhead. The award-winning Gairloch Museum — housed in a former Cold War bunker — tells the story of this coast beautifully, and is a grand refuge on a wet afternoon.
Loch Maree & the road inland
Just inland lies Loch Maree, a long, island-studded freshwater loch that many rate the most beautiful in Scotland, watched over by the great mountain of Slioch. Its shores hold ancient Caledonian pinewood and the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve — Britain’s oldest — with waymarked trails up into the pines and the mountain. It’s a short, spectacular drive from the coast.
This whole shore was Mackenzie country — the Mackenzies of Gairloch held Loch Maree and Flowerdale for close to five hundred years, one of the few Highland estates to stay in one family right through the centuries of upheaval.
Staying here
It’s a wonderful place to base up for a night or two — beaches to walk, a shore to explore, a museum and cafés for the weather, and the whole Wester Ross coast on the doorstep. We found a quiet spot to settle the van and soak it up.
Watch: the Victoria Falls, Loch Maree
The Victoria Falls on the Abhainn Garbhaig, just off the A832 at Slattadale — named after Queen Victoria’s visit to Loch Maree in 1877. There’s a car park and a short waymarked walk down to the viewing platforms.
