Our takeThe wild, slow whisky coast — single-track roads, lochside ferries and some of the best scenery in Scotland

West of the Great Glen, whisky is made at the end of long roads and short ferries. This trail links one old Highland distillery under Ben Nevis with a pioneering group of new ones on the west coast — peninsula, island and sea loch.

Base 1 — Fort William

Ben Nevis sits at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain on the edge of Fort William, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in the Highlands (founded 1825), owned by Japan’s Nikka. Its robust, rich, old-fashioned malt is a bridge between Scotland and Japan, and it runs tours and tastings Monday to Friday (Saturdays in season). Glencoe and Glenfinnan are a short drive either way.

Base 2 — Ardnamurchan & Morvern

Ardnamurchan, on the peninsula that ends at the most westerly point of the British mainland, was opened in 2014 by the independent bottler Adelphi and runs on local renewable energy, making peated and unpeated malts; tours are seasonal. Across the sound, Nc’nean on Morvern is certified organic and net-zero, founded by Annabel Thomas; small-group tours run Monday to Friday by booking. The Corran Ferry across Loch Linnhe is the usual way in from Fort William.

These two routings include a ferry crossing — check CalMac and the Corran Ferry timetable.

Base 3 — Mull & Tiree

Tobermory is the only distillery on Mull, on the waterfront of the brightly-painted town; it makes two whiskies, the unpeated fruity Tobermory and the peaty, smoky Ledaig, and runs limited tours and warehouse tastings by booking. Mull is reached by the ferry from Oban or from Lochaline. Further out, Isle of Tiree at West Hynish — opened in 2019, with its first single malt released in early 2025 and the popular Tyree Gin — is the outpost of the trail, on a low, sandy, famously sunny island reached by ferry from Oban.

Overnights, food & the practical bit

This is ferry country — read our guide to the CalMac situation and book vehicle crossings ahead, especially with a motorhome. Single-track roads on Ardnamurchan and Morvern are slow; allow time. Midges are an issue in summer.
