Tormore Distillery, Advie: The Architectural Showpiece

Overview

Tormore, at Advie in Strathspey, is the most striking distillery in Speyside to look at — a grand, almost palatial building of the 1950s, designed by a president of the Royal Academy, complete with ornamental lake and a musical clock. Its whisky is a light, clean Speyside style.

The history

Tormore was built in 1958–60 for Long John Distillers, designed by Sir Albert Richardson as a deliberate architectural statement — the first entirely new Speyside distillery of the 20th century. It was bought by the independent Elixir Distillers in 2022, who have signalled plans to open it up.

The water & the land

Tormore draws on the Achvochkie Burn, fed from Loch an Oir, the “loch of gold”.

Tormore had no founding clan — it was a mid-century commercial showpiece at Advie, in historic Grant/Seafield Strathspey.

Visiting

Tormore has historically been closed to the public, though its new owners Elixir Distillers have signalled plans for a visitor experience — check the website for the latest. Even from the road, the building is worth slowing down for.
