Overview
Royal Lochnagar, on Deeside beneath the mountain of Lochnagar, is one of the smallest — and grandest — of distilleries, its “Royal” prefix earned from a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert from Balmoral, just across the river, in 1848. It makes a rich, waxy Highland malt.
The history
Royal Lochnagar was founded in 1845 by John Begg. When Victoria and Albert bought neighbouring Balmoral, Begg invited the royal party over; they came within days, and the distillery was granted a royal warrant soon after. It has been a small, prized Diageo distillery ever since.
The water & the land
Royal Lochnagar draws on the Scarnock springs in the Cairngorm foothills above Deeside.
Royal Lochnagar has no founding clan but a genuine royal association: it stands beside Balmoral, the Crown’s Highland home, in country historically held by the Farquharsons and Gordons of Deeside.
