Overview
Nc’nean (say “nuck-neen”), on the remote Morvern peninsula, is one of Scotland’s most pioneering distilleries — certified organic and net-zero, using organic barley and a recycled-glass bottle. Founded by Annabel Thomas, it makes an experimental, lighter-styled single malt and has become a poster child for sustainable whisky.
The history
Nc’nean was built on the Drimnin estate and released its first whisky in 2020. From the outset it set out to do things differently — organic, powered by renewable energy, and unafraid to experiment with yeast and cask — and it made headlines by selling its very first bottle at charity auction for a record sum.
The water & the land
Nc’nean draws on two springs on the Drimnin estate.
The distillery’s name comes from Neachneohain, a queen of spirits in Gaelic folklore. Morvern was historic Maclean country, a remote and beautiful corner of the western Highlands.
Visiting
Nc’nean runs small-group tours Monday to Friday — booking is required given its remote location; check the website. Reaching Morvern, by the Corran ferry or the long road round, is part of the adventure.
