Overview
Macduff, on the River Deveron by the twin towns of Banff and Macduff, makes a smooth, honeyed east-coast malt bottled as The Deveron (and formerly Glen Deveron) — and a key filling for the William Lawson’s blend.
The history
Macduff was founded in 1960 by a consortium of Glasgow whisky men and completed in 1962, a rare post-war new-build on the Moray Firth coast. It is now a Bacardi/Dewar’s distillery.
The water & the land
Macduff draws on the Gelly Burn spring.
Macduff had no founding clan — it was a commercial consortium build on the River Deveron. The town of Macduff is named for the Duff family, the Earls of Fife, who dominated this coast.
Visiting
Macduff is not open to the public — it is a working production distillery. Its whisky appears mainly in blends and in occasional official or independent single-malt bottlings.
