Overview

Lochlea is a single-estate farm distillery in Ayrshire making a clean, characterful Lowland malt from barley grown in its own fields — a genuine grain-to-glass operation. Its great distinction is its ground: this is the farm where Robert Burns lived and worked as a young man.

The history

Lochlea opened in 2018, a family-owned distillery built on a working Ayrshire farm. It has made its name quickly with its seasonal “Harvest,” “Fallow” and “Ploughing” releases, all rooted in the rhythm of the farming year.

The water & the land

Lochlea uses its own on-site water source and grows its own barley on the farm.

Lochlea has no clan link, but a famous literary one: Robert Burns lived at Lochlea Farm from 1777 to 1784, and much of his early life — and his father’s death here — shaped the poet he became. The whisky is made on that very ground.

Visiting

Lochlea has a visitor centre on the farm and runs tours — book ahead; check the website. It combines beautifully with the Burns heritage sites around Alloway and Tarbolton.
