Overview
The Isle of Tiree distillery, at West Hynish on the low, sandy, famously sunny island of Tiree, brought whisky-making to the island for the first time. Opened in 2019, it released its first single malt in early 2025, and also makes the popular Tyree Gin.
The history
The Tiree Whisky Company was founded in 2012 by two islanders, and the distillery opened in 2019 — a real community venture on an island of fewer than seven hundred people. Its first single malt was released in January 2025 after a patient maturation in the salt air.

Tiree’s local water is notably hard and needs extra filtering for distilling; the exact named source is not publicly published.
Tiree was held by Clan Maclean of Duart under the Lords of the Isles, before passing to the Campbell Dukes of Argyll, who still own much of the island — a classic Argyll story of Maclean land taken into Campbell hands.

The Isle of Tiree distillery has a shop and visitor facilities and runs tours and tastings in season — check the website, as hours are seasonal. Tiree is reached by ferry from Oban or by a small plane, and is a favourite of windsurfers for its endless white beaches.
