Overview

The Isle of Harris distillery, in Tarbert, was built as a “social distillery” — its whole purpose to bring jobs and people to an island bleeding population. Its first single malt, The Hearach, arrived in 2023 to great acclaim, and its beautiful whitewashed building, shop and café have made it one of the warmest welcomes in the Hebrides.

The history

The distillery opened in 2015, the creation of a community-minded venture determined to give Harris an economic future beyond crofting and tourism. It made its name first with the hugely successful Isle of Harris Gin, its bottle embossed with the ripples of the sea, while the whisky matured — and released its first single malt, The Hearach, in September 2023.

The water & the land

Isle of Harris draws its water from the Abhainn Cnoc a’ Charrain, a burn near Tarbert.

Harris carries a genuine clan story: it was the land of the MacLeods of Harris (the Sìol Tormoid), whose chiefs held the Harris estates from their seat at Dunvegan Castle on Skye — the same great MacLeod line that gave Talisker its ground.

Visiting

Isle of Harris has a flagship visitor centre with a shop and café, and runs guided tours and tastings — book ahead in season; the shop is open year-round. Check the website. It sits in Tarbert, the ferry hub, so it’s easy to reach on a Hebridean tour.
