Overview
The Glasgow Distillery brought single-malt distilling back to the city in 2014, reviving a name that dates to 1770. Its single malt is branded 1770, and it also makes the well-known Makar gin. It is an independent, craft-scale operation on the west side of the city.
The history
The modern company was founded in 2012 and began distilling in 2014, reviving the historic “Glasgow Distillery Company” name once carried by the old Dundashill distillery. Its 1770 single malt was among the first new Glasgow malts in generations.
The water & the land
The Glasgow Distillery uses soft water from Loch Katrine, via the city’s municipal supply.
It has no clan link — it is a modern craft distillery reviving the name of the 18th-century Dundashill distillery, in the great industrial city of Glasgow.
Visiting
The Glasgow Distillery sits on an industrial estate and has no dedicated visitor centre, though limited tours are run (at times in partnership with the Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery) — by arrangement; check the website.
