Overview
Ardnahoe is Islay’s newest distillery, opened in 2018 high above the Sound of Islay with what may be the finest view of any distillery in Scotland — straight across the water to the Paps of Jura. Built by an independent family firm of respected whisky bottlers, it makes a peated, coastal, new-wave Islay malt and has quickly become a favourite stop for its setting alone.
The history
Ardnahoe was founded in 2018 by the Laing family, through their firm Hunter Laing & Co — long-established independent bottlers who decided to build a distillery of their own. They brought in the celebrated former Bruichladdich and Bowmore man Jim McEwan out of retirement to help design and commission it, which gave the newcomer instant credibility. Its first single malt was released in 2024, and it is one of the clearest signs of Islay’s continuing whisky boom.
The water & the land
Ardnahoe takes its water from Ardnahoe Loch, the hill loch above it — sometimes nicknamed the “Infinite Loch” — giving very soft, peat-filtered water. In the old island tradition it uses long wooden worm-tub condensers, betting that older methods make a richer spirit.
As a brand-new distillery, Ardnahoe has no clan lineage. But it looks out over the Sound of Islay towards Finlaggan, the island seat of Clan Donald and the Lords of the Isles — so even the island’s youngest distillery sits within sight of the heart of its oldest history, on land that later became the Campbell estate.
Visiting
Ardnahoe has a five-star visitor centre and café, and runs tours and tastings — book ahead. It opens daily in season with reduced winter hours; check the website. Even for non-drinkers the view from its café across to Jura is reason enough to make the drive.
